Quality of Life and Quality of Care
With our implementation of the Eden Alternative to long-term care, the emphasis is on Quality of Life and Quality of Care for all residents. The reciprocal relationship between our residents and our pets, plants and visiting children is often very meaningful. Residents often act as caregivers to our cats, dogs, birds, fish and flora. Many of our residents enjoy visiting and doing activities with the children that visit Pinecrest. Our residents often receive companionship and love as a result of these relationships. All residents are invited to monthly Resident Council meetings where they can voice their concerns and suggestions about anything pertaining to life at Pinecrest.
Quality, award-winning care is provided by our Pinecrest team, consisting of several departments working together to provide care directly or indirectly. Typically, the definition of 'care' means a group of professionals that come together to establish a comprehensive treatment plan.It is that but at Pincrest it's more. Our definition also includes the Eden Alternative element, 'helping others to grow.' Each person that joins our community has the ability to grow, contribute to their new surroundings and be well-known by the care partners. We believe people are looking for 'home' where they are well-known. We are a community of care and we work hard towards making a person feel welcome, well-known, and where life is worth living.Therapy/medical services are part of the services they receive, but they do not reflect the 'home' environment we want to acheive. Our goal is to create a 'garden,' a human habitat where the spirit is allowed to grow.
Our social workers act as resident advocates, working with residents and families through the admission process, medical appointments and other needs. The Activity department works with residents, planning outings, movies, games and visiting time.
Pinecrest benefits greatly not only from our elders, but from our rich past as an organization and the many changes that have taken place since our beginning over 90 years ago.
Pinecrest History The original Pinecrest building was erected in 1922 and operated as a tuberculosis sanitarium for 39 years. Several civil works projects, starting in 1933, advanced the Pinecrest building and grounds, adding a third floor. A branch of the Michigan Department Laboratory was established at Pinecrest in January 1939, and served a greater part of the Upper Peninsula. In 1953 and 1954, improvements were made, including the erection of a new water tower, and the complete renovation of the hospital property. With the continued progress of medicine the incidence of Tuberculosis diminished. Studies were conducted and it was decided that Pinecrest would convert from a sanitarium to a medical care facility, which would provide skilled nursing care for the aged and the chronically ill. On April 1, 1961, Pinecrest Medical Care Facility was born.
In 2006 we committed to the Eden Alternative journey. One of improving quality of life for our Elders and for recapturing a meaningful work life for our Caregivers. We are dedicated to building a garden (human habitat) that has the goal of eliminating the plagues of Loneliness, Helplessness and Boredom. They are plagues of the human spirit, not the human body, but they can be just as debilitating and just as deadly as any disease of the body.
Pinecrest Vision: “Our Pinecrest family branches out to the Tri-County community. Your family is our family. Together we grow and thrive as companions while caring for one another. We believe variety and spontaneity are the keys to life worth living.”
