The Eden Alternative is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to remaking the experience of aging and disability across America and around the world.
The Eden Alternative Registry includes homes that are making a public commitment to creating a healthy Human habitat for their Elders, and those who care for them. It is hard work for a home to “buck the system” and create a true home, and community, instead. Pinecrest has committed to doing just that, through adopting the Eden Alternative approach.
Pinecrest, through the Eden Alternative, is dedicated to supporting Elders in the creation of communities which eliminate the plagues of Loneliness, Helplessness, and Boredom. These are plagues of the human spirit, not the human body, but they can be just as debilitating and just as deadly as any disease of the body.
The core concept of The Eden Alternative is strikingly simple. We must teach ourselves to see places where Elders live as habitats for human beings rather than facilities for the frail and elderly. The traditional medical model that has been dominant in the care of our Elders has many shortcomings.
Pinecrest is on a never-ending journey that will increasingly allow for its Elders to experience more spontaneity, variety, companionship with children and animals. We understand that when it comes time for long-term care, most people aren’t worried if they will receive enough therapy or if there will be a carefully planned schedule for them to fall into. People are concerned that they will become lonely, bored and miss the things they once loved to do. At Pinecrest, we are committed to creating an environment where nurturing relationships with staff, animals and children can be fostered.
